What do you know about business expansion? Most of us have the erroneous opinion that businesses are organic and will grow on its own. We believe that a business will grow and expand just as human beings grow. Well, the internal mechanism of human beings is pre determined and there is no scope for any complications. Even then, non release of a hormone at the right time can lead to growth problems.
Business is not organic and its expansion will have to be planned. How to proceed? Do you know whether it is time to expand yet? Do you want to expand simply because you don’t want the tag of a small business person or is it really time to proceed further? Do the current market conditions support such a move? Or have you been waiting for the market conditions to improve for the past five years?
You will have to do a lot of planning before you can carry out the expansion. You will have to plan the various stages of expansion. Further, you will have to create a backup plan to fall back on in the event the expansion does not work. You will also need another plan for further expansion if your existing plan succeeds far beyond what you had earlier anticipated.
At the same time, you must be wary of too much planning. It is one thing to plan your expansion, it is another thing to plan for just the theoretical aspects and ignore the practical issues involved.
Another important point to note is the process of expansion is not necessarily related to the number of employees you employ or the office space you occupy. If you are generating more revenue, dealing in high value clients and have specialized in a particular area of your business, you can still claim to have expanded. There must be growth.
The growth can be intangible as well as tangible. As long as there is positive movement in your business and a change in working conditions for the better, you can be confident that you have expanded your business.
